What you should know before you apply
Work permits and the quota system
Kazakhstan runs a quota system. Permits are employer-driven and allocated against quotas set by company and by industry, which means an employer can want you and still be unable to hire you until quota is available. Employers must also demonstrate they tried to recruit Kazakh nationals first.
Realistic timing: one to two months for the permit, then a further two to four weeks for the visa. Permits are typically valid for up to one year and are renewable. Intra-corporate transfers and certain highly qualified categories sit outside the standard quota route.
Language
Kazakh is the state language and Russian is widely used in business and on site. International project work is conducted in English, but Russian goes a long way in day-to-day working life, particularly outside Almaty and Astana.
What to expect on site
Much of the work is in the west of the country — Atyrau, Aktau, Tengiz — on rotation, with camp accommodation and a harsh continental climate. Contracts are usually fixed-term and tied to project phases. Check mobilisation and demobilisation terms, rotation ratio, and medical and evacuation cover before accepting.
